Kelly, Stronger, Better.

I’ve been playing the album tirelessly for weeks. I know, I know – this came out what, like late last year? Maybe because, at last, I got to fully listen to it and read the lyrics to the songs. I tend to get caught up when I do this, it’s like I’m in a zone. And I admit I enjoy singing along to her songs more so, when I understand what they talk about.  I’ve been a big fan all these years ’cause (1) I really like her brand of pop/rock, (2) amidst the antics of most pop stars, she always makes it about the music and (3) do I really need to say this? Her voice is incredible and just awe-inspiring. In fact in choosing my fantasy voice, I’d take hers any day. I’d like to think of myself as more of a rock star (hehe). Stronger, her 5th release, is exactly this compared to All I Ever Wanted and My December. Her strongest, I feel, is still Breakaway. But I’m concerned with her choice of singles and she needs to come up with better music videos too. Anyways, I like all the tracks except maybe 2 out of the 17 but I chose my favorites below:

Let’s start with the upbeat ones: Mr. Know It All, though I have reservations about it being the 1st single, has a catchy, great vibe to it and presents a more subdued Kelly. She didn’t belt out here so it was something new. But come on we like it better when she does so to my relief she followed it up with What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger). Not only that but it’s a power song. If you’re down trust me, these lines will surely change that:

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger/Stand a little taller/Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone/What doesn’t kill you makes a fighter/Footsteps even lighter/Doesn’t mean I’m over cause you’re gone”

I have the same sentiments with Dark Side, I don’t think it’s single-worthy. The chorus saves that song. She could’ve chosen Einstein, the title gets you curious already. The song starts off:

“Simple math/Our love divided by the square root of pride/Multiply your lies plus time/I’m going out of my mind/It was heavy when I finally figured/It out alone”

Or she could’ve gone with Alone. It has that attitude – the signature angst and goes like:

“‘Cause when I’m with you I’m alone/No matter what you say/I hope you know, woah/That I’m alone/You say you’re gonna change/But I know you won’t, woah oh”

You Can’t Win is a great rock out song that plays on the fact that you can’t please everybody. She even talks about her own frustrations with her critics:

“If you’re thin, poor little walking disease/If you’re not, they’re all screaming obese/If you’re straight, why aren’t you married yet?/If you’re gay, why aren’t you waving a flag?”

Now we move on to the nostalgia. You Love Me is a heavy anthem. I love the lines that say:

“You say I’m not good enough, I’m not good enough/But what you really mean is, You’re not good enough, you’re not good enough/You can’t deliver so you turn it around”

And it just gets better from there. Last one is The War Is Over which struck me especially with its refrain that goes:

“All I have to say is you don’t deserve me, you don’t deserve me/I’m finally walking away, ’cause you only hurt me/And you’re not worthy”

Still my favorite American Idol. I hope she keeps making records until she’s 80 or somethin. Until then, I think Imma give it another spin after posting this. Ready your earplugs.

Kelly Clarkson Vs. Ryan Tedder

Uh oh. Drama in Hollywood land. One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder better have a good explanation.

jingle ball press room 2 141207

Issue? The resemblance between Beyonce’s hit ballad ‘Halo’ and Kelly’s new single ‘Already Gone’.

Connection? Both written by Mr. Tedder, yup the ‘Bleeding Love’ and ‘Battlefield’ songwriter.

Point? Clarkson didn’t want to be accused of ripping off other artists’ songs, especially not Beyonce.

Catch? She was apparently been making efforts to stop the release of her ‘version’ but her execs already made the decision for her and releases it as her 3rd single. I guess she has no choice.

The Defense? Tedder was said to be hurt and saddened by the accusations and denies that he made 2 very similar music and gave it to these 2 great artists.

Other Party? Beyonce and her camp are silent about the issue. Probably doesn’t care or thinks otherwise.

My Opinion? C-R-A-Z-Y. When I first heard the song, I loved it so much but not because it was reminiscent of another song. Halo had become a favorite on my player for quite a while, so I think I’ll know if another artist decided to cover it. The 2 songs have different premise, message and melody. Okay, maybe from a musically untrained ear the similarities wouldn’t be obvious, but I listened to it carefully and it really didn’t seem and feel the same. I love both songs! The fuss is so unnecessary. Hope this won’t take away from the song.

Brand New Kelly!

Since 2007’s My December, we didn’t hear much about AI’s first winner and in my opinion, still the best American Idol out there. The album didn’t get as much commercial success as Breakaway although, I did love the 3 singles that came out with it especially Sober and Never Again. I think it has a lot to do with the controversy with her record label specifically to Clive Davis, legendary star-maker, with regards to ‘creative control’. Even I got influenced since I didn’t get a copy myself, which I regret now. Apparently, Davis didn’t think the album contained ‘hits’ and wanted her to rework on it. The issue was that most of the songs in the record talked about or contained themes of heartbreak and angst. When you think about it, it is true since she took control of her music career in Breakaway. But whatever happened to freedom of speech? Clarkson said in an interview that she doesn’t plan which songs will make it to her albums, it just so happened that among all songs she’s written these were the one that got pushed through and these songs happened to be sad. You know when women express these kinds of feelings it is automatically presumed that a boyfriend has gotten them astrayed. Or basically, that they should only talk about how love has set them free and made them better persons. Kelly’s a rocker, and rock songs almost always exude angst in them. She’s unique that’s why I love her, she’s not like your typical singing competition winner and I’m glad she took control over her career.

The new single entitled “My Life Would Suck Without You” written and produced by Max Martin and Dr. Luke comes out January 19 in the US so we have to wait ’til then to hear it. Unless, someone leaks it in the net earlier. 🙂

The album “All I Ever Wanted” (official cover above) will hit record bars and outlets on March 17, 2009. To satiate our thirst for the moment the lyrics to the song got published already and here it is:

‘My Life Would Suck Without You’
Guess this means you’re sorry
You’re standing at my door
Guess this means you take back
What you said before
Like how much you wanted
Anyone but me
Said you’d never come back
But here you are again
Cuz we belong together now
Forever united here somehow
You got a piece of me
And honestly
My life would suck without you
Maybe I was stupid for telling you goodbye
Maybe I was wrong for tryin’ to pick a fight
I know that I’ve got issues
But you’re pretty messed up too
Anyway, I found out I’m nothing without you
Cuz we belong together now
Forever united here somehow
You got a piece of me
And honestly
My life would suck without you
Being with you is so dysfunctional
I really shouldn’t miss you, but I can’t let go
Oh yeah
Cuz we belong together now
Forever united here somehow
You got a piece of me
And honestly
My life would suck without you
