2013 in Music: Girls Run The World

It’s obvious , the divas dominated the charts, the airwaves and the awards shows. And they sure made some hella noise. Still, healthy competition came from their male counterparts.  Justin Timberlake brought his sexy back back for his two, yes 2, albums: The 20/20 Experience 1 & 2. I really dig his signature Pop/RNB sound and you think by now he and Timbaland would’ve run out of ideas. Plus those ballads, you can never go wrong with a JT love song. *swoon* You also can’t overlook (they’re everywhere!) the mega success of One Direction whose Midnight Memories topped the Billboard 200, gave them the record for the only group to have their first 3 albums debut at no. 1. For me they’re eye-candy so let them do what they want but seriously the tattoos have got to stop (ehem Harry). At least Liam still looks clean for the most part. Even the rap gods bowed down: Jay Z, who officially removed the “-” from his name (uhm, okay), still leads the pack with Magna Carta… Holy Grail. Late this year, Eminem released part 2 of his breakout The Marshall Mathers LP. And of course, Yeezus, which he refers to as his god name. Like really? ugh so over him. Yeah, I’m talking about you Kanye.

2013 was literally a pop female explosion. Let’s just say it, ratchet as everything she does right now. Miley is the blockbuster hit. I love all the pop albums that came out but damn, Bangerz is my jam yo!! Didn’t know Southern Pop/Hip-hop got it goin’ on. And THAT kitty is so cute. Since we’re in the topic let’s move on to Katy Perry. Prism presented her in a different light. Light as in bright and as in feather. Like a breath of fresh air and you can tell she’s in a good place. The songs came from a good place. Newcomer Lorde making waves with Royals and recently, Team. She’s the ultimate outsider and we relate to her because of it. Don’t forget earlier this year, Disney Alums Demi Lovato and the now solo, Selena Gomez both shined with their respective releases.  Demi was an emotional piece, showcasing her vulnerability and vocal strength. I’d like to think she’s the Christina from Selena’s Britney. Stars Dance was a dance fest. Fun and sexy. Yeah, you should try watching the Come and Get It video, whut. My personal fave, Sara Bareilles, also came out with the power anthem, Brave off The Blessed Unrest. Happy for her Album of the Year Grammy nomination!  Speaking of award shows, Taylor Swift is still reaping the rewards from last year’s Red. That record is awesome. For months Lady Gaga teased us with her ARTPOP. It even came with an app. So when she said she lives for the Applause then I’m more than willing to give it. Paws up, monsters! The record’s unconventional. I mean it’s still mostly electro dance music but I don’t know, maybe that’s what happens when you infuse Pop with Art. LOL, I’m talking shit am I? Can I just say something about that Gaga-Xtina performance of Do What U Want on The Voice Finale? I GAGGED. I LIVE for this kind of thing.

Capping off the year, It’s-Britney-Bitch Spears gives us her most personal record. They say that all the time, how personal can you get? Kidding. The first single Work Bitch brought us back the Dance-ney we always loved. So we held hands in tears, in awe as she gyrated to her British accent. But just like that we were caught unguarded. We were not prepared.

Beyonce-AlbumQUEEN Bey rendered all them artists irrelevant by dropping a bomb an album out of nowhere. Sure we heard she’s recording but with no single close to year end we all thought we were safe from the onslaught. But we’re not, no one is and we all just died from Beyonce realnezz. This bitch had enough time from her Mrs. Carter World Tour to even conceptualize, shoot music videos for all the tracks. Well she did it on B’Day so she can do it again. So there it goes, who run the world? Anyone dare say the contrary?

Beyoncé’s 4 shows growth in her music

I have to admit I wasn’t too excited when Run The World (Girls) came out, that time the title wasn’t even decided yet. Even the blogs I frequent to feels the same way more so having listened to the whole record, pretty much concluded that the album doesn’t contain any worthy singles. I, on the other hand, searched for the lyrics and really let it soak on me and by the time Beyoncé performed on the Billboard Music Awards I was already singing along and feeling like I could run the world. That performance was astounding; there couldn’t have been a more perfect time for her to receive the Millennium Award. She just showed everyone that she deserved that praise. Finally, just mere 2 weeks ago I got a copy of 4 from a record bar. Yes as in the actual CD, she’s one of those artists whose songs I won’t be satisfied by just downloading the mp3’s. Besides it’s a collection of mine.

4, she said, is a very special number because aside from being her 4th solo record it’s the date of her birthday (as well as some of her close friends/family), her wedding date and that eventually it was the title chosen by fans so she stuck with it. The only trouble is you don’t get the slightest idea what the record will be like. After the 1st listen, I knew that the album is unlike anything she released before. It’s ballad-driven, intimate and subtle in terms of production. Run The World kind of misrepresents the record in a way cause it’s the lone up-tempo track (it’s actually the last). Ya, there are the drum and horns-inspired End of Time and Countdown but they’re hardly what you call dance. The album is co-written and produced by B mostly with The-Dream. After countless sound trips, my favorites are of course the love songs: her love is intoxicating. Best Thing I Never Had, the official 2nd single, is like Irreplaceable 2.0 and is co-written by Babyface. B looks beautiful in the video by the way. Love on Top is the one I really enjoy singing to err trying to sing, it makes you feel good. 1+1 is the song she premiered on American Idol and I’m amazed how she and Jay-Z are so much deeper in love than ever. I Care and Start Over characterizes the staple sad songs and really shows B’s vulnerability. Also with the very sentimental I Was Here written by Diane Warren and co-produced by Ryan Tedder (Halo). The deluxe edition includes other mid-tempo tracks: Lay Up Under Me, Schoolin’ Life (like this one) and 3 remixed version of Run The World. She slows it down again with Dance With You.

In my humble opinion, this album depicts Beyoncé’s maturity as an artist. She’s in the stage wherein she can afford to not care about commercial success and just showcase her vocal talent and song-writing skills. The irony is that the album still debuted at no.1 on Billboard so it’s safe to say she once again succeeded in getting her message across. I do miss her butt-shakin’ and finger-pointing dance moves but this risqué release definitely makes me appreciate her more.

Will Beyonce ‘run the world’ again?

I’m sure you’ve heard the song already. It leaked in the internet before it got released yesterday in iTunes. So what are your thoughts on Beyonce‘s latest single, Run The World (Girls) on a yet-to-be-titled new album? Someone said the single is messy, I kind of agree. It seems rushed. I don’t know maybe its just one of those I have to listen to over and over. It has that ‘Independent Women’ message as the title suggests, I don’t think the lyrics has anything remarkable too. Let’s just see when the anticipated video gets released since we’ve seen teasers and behind the scenes footage on the net. Her ‘I Am… Sasha Fierce’ album put her on top in 2008/2009, will this happen again in 2011?

Bad Girl GaGa!

Telephone has premiered today on E!. This video marking the 2nd collaboration between GaGa and B has been much-anticipated and talked about.

More like a short film (it’s over 9 minutes long), it didn’t relate to the song once again kind of what happened to Paparazzi which coincidentally is where the story picked up. I immediately loved this track upon hearing The Fame Monster and its supposed to be a fun song – about dancing and stuff but instead she turned it into one of her creepy, twisted creations. Beyonce a.k.a. “Honey B” was also just as weird. There where funny parts though, I did laugh on the line saying: “You know what they say, once you kill the cow, you’ve got to make a burger.” And I know we’re talking about GaGa here but the wardrobe, man! There’s really nothing much.

In a nutshell, I didn’t like it. Still think the song is awesome! And oh, you can watch the video here. 🙂

It’s all about the VMAs!

VMA ratings higher than 17% this year; the highest in 5 years, thanks to Mr. West.

But no thanks.

Kanye’s ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) triggered once again and what’s silly is that he wasn’t even nominated for that category and yet he still had something to say. I understand if he has qualms on not winning but damn that was Best Female Video for crying out loud! I’m sure you’ve heard about him taking Taylor’s winning moment when he interrupted during her speech. It even brought about several jokes on the net. It was funny btw. I remembered Beyonce’s shocked reaction, she was like: “Oh, Kanye!” It was really nice when she let Taylor have her moment again when the former won for Video of the Year (well-deserved!). Although some were saying these were all staged, I doubt it. Kanye’s a douchebag even in real life, wait a jerk too and an asshole.

Another crazy thing that happened that night was Lady GaGa. I don’t know what to do with her anymore, I know she’s a self-confessed attention whore but what the hell were she wearing!!! Ugh, I mean I love her and her music but… when she does things like that. Tsk, I’m just glad she won for Best New Artist. As well as Britney’s Womanizer for Best Pop Video, kind of stupid she wasn’t nominated for the Female category.

All in all, the VMAs was such a blast once again. Janet’s performace was amazing I wish she had lengthen it. Madonna’s tribute speech for MJ was surprisingly good, for a moment I thought she will make it all about her. I wished B performed another song, as much as I loved Single Ladies but that was like so last year already! And I didn’t like the changes she made either. As with GaGa, she murdered the song once again. Paparazzi is one of my favorite songs from her and I was disappointed with the video and this performance.

Okay that’s it, til next year then. 🙂

Kelly Clarkson Vs. Ryan Tedder

Uh oh. Drama in Hollywood land. One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder better have a good explanation.

jingle ball press room 2 141207

Issue? The resemblance between Beyonce’s hit ballad ‘Halo’ and Kelly’s new single ‘Already Gone’.

Connection? Both written by Mr. Tedder, yup the ‘Bleeding Love’ and ‘Battlefield’ songwriter.

Point? Clarkson didn’t want to be accused of ripping off other artists’ songs, especially not Beyonce.

Catch? She was apparently been making efforts to stop the release of her ‘version’ but her execs already made the decision for her and releases it as her 3rd single. I guess she has no choice.

The Defense? Tedder was said to be hurt and saddened by the accusations and denies that he made 2 very similar music and gave it to these 2 great artists.

Other Party? Beyonce and her camp are silent about the issue. Probably doesn’t care or thinks otherwise.

My Opinion? C-R-A-Z-Y. When I first heard the song, I loved it so much but not because it was reminiscent of another song. Halo had become a favorite on my player for quite a while, so I think I’ll know if another artist decided to cover it. The 2 songs have different premise, message and melody. Okay, maybe from a musically untrained ear the similarities wouldn’t be obvious, but I listened to it carefully and it really didn’t seem and feel the same. I love both songs! The fuss is so unnecessary. Hope this won’t take away from the song.

Sasha Once More

Here’s the new Beyonce video for the song Ego off Disc 2 of I Am… Sasha Fierce. The video features Beyonce donning her alter-ego once more with the signature sepia feel and look and don’t forget her 2 backup dancers. Nothing much going on with the video; just her dancing. I don’t like it very much, not to mention Ego is not exactly my favorite song from the album. I would’ve wanted her to do Sweet Dreams. Anyways, I wonder what the other video is. If you’re keeping up with her since the release of this album, you’ll notice she’s been releasing a pair of songs everytime; one from I Am… and another from Sasha Fierce. First she released If I Were A Boy and Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) then succeeded by Halo and Diva. Okay I won’t keep you, take a look.

More from Beyonce, she’s releasing a video collection and cutting-edge electronica dance mixes of the songs from I Am… Sasha Fierce. At present, the DVD/CD offering entitled Above and Beyonce is only available at Walmart but if you’re interested here’s the tracklisting:

Scared Of Lonely

A fanmade video with the lyrics of one of my favorite songs in Beyonce’s latest record I Am… Sasha Fierce. It’s one of those songs that when I heard it made me think and somehow I can relate to it. Coz’ that’s what I’m afraid of, if someone will ask what’s my biggest fear… this is probably going to be my answer. 😦
