Welcoming 1.1.11

I wanted to say “happy new year!” before the year ends and before the fireworks and noise fill the air. I’m just happy we’re about to start a new year and a new decade. I don’t know what 2011 may bring but I’m very eager to find out.

Hope everyone have a blast on NYE. Cheers!!! 🙂

The Year That Was

Wow. How do I put in to one post the highlights of the past year?

Let’s start on the other side of the world, shall we? Particularly where its all glitz and glamour, not. We’ve had our fair share of crazy in 2010, from the late night feud at NBC (Team Conan!) to Mel Gibson’s racist rants. And how could you forget the douche who cheated on Sandra Bullock? Yes, I’m talking about you Jesse James. I can’t even decide which Lilo controversy to put here. Is it the jail time? Or the back to rehab stint? Or better yet, why not the bong video from Miley recently. No wait, wasn’t Paris busted with coke in her purse? Which apparently wasn’t hers and it wasn’t coke but gum. Ya right. A few couples headed to splitsville in 2010: David and Courtney, Eva and Tony, Christina and Jordan, Ryan and ScarJo. Let’s not forget Zanessa too.

On the more positive side of things, Avatar became the biggest film in history raking in $3 billion overthrowing Titanic at the top spot. Nothing lost here since both films were by James Cameron. Simon Cowell and Ellen left AI, soon enough J.Lo and Steven Tyler were asked to fill in. Bristol Palin almost won DWTS. (whew!) Then there’s that Prince William and Kate Middleton engagement. In music, Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream probably came true this year, plus she got hitched! She did face some fierce competition like Ke$ha, Taylor, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, JB, Usher and Eminem.

In the local scene, halfway through the year PNoy became the 15th President of the Philippines and although I did not vote for him, he’s really not the worst among the candidates running for office, trust me. This was the first year the automated voting system was implemented and it was my first time to vote ever (I was 23 then), I’m a bit ashamed of that fact. Everyone especially the youth should vote as soon as the law grants that right. Moving on, Manny Pacquiao fought his way to his 8th boxing title, Maria Venus Raj brought major, major pride for our country and Charice signed on a recurring role with my most favorite show on the planet. Oh, Regine and Ogie finally exchanged their vows.

Personally, It was my most challenging year yet – career wise. I’ve never dreaded ‘April 15’ so much in my entire life. When it came, it left an impression on me that by August I wanted out, hehe. Flipside, I also got to travel to places I’ve only read about or seen in pictures before. I’ve been to Bohol, Cebu, Puerto Princesa, Boracay and Bolinao all during the year. I’m hoping to continue the streak next year, abroad perhaps?

Yup, those were the 2010 moments. It could be a lot worse you know. 🙂 Toast to a new year, a better year!

The Girl On Fire

“Katniss Everdeen survived the Hunger Games. Now the Capitol wants revenge.”

I have just finished reading Catching Fire! I started it early this year, put it off for a while and wasn’t able to resume until now. Crazy year I guess and it helped that I wasn’t reading the e-book through a laptop, it messes up my eyes. So I decided to start from the beginning again. Spoiler alert!

I really like the fact that the books are such an easy read. They’re short, fast-paced and full of suspense with just a hint of romance. You can practically finish a book in one sitting. Judging by how the story went, Suzanne Collins probably envisioned Katniss’ story to be a series since the plot turned to be well thought of. With the Quarter Quell and the mockingjay pin which became more than just a token but a symbol of hope, it was somehow believable that her heroine ended up in the Games again. I know, I was struck too. Collins sure love surprises, there’s more of them here. From the existence of District 13 to Peeta’s baby announcement. Even the turnout of events in the clock-like arena and President Snow’s unmistakable arrival. You know, the books are actually brutal, sick and twisted in many ways. But the way it was told so lightly, I think, makes it work.

Of course the personal aspect of the story is what gives it the ‘unputdownable’ factor. I’ll say it right off the bat that I’m Team Peeta no matter what! Whatever’s coming in Mockingjay, the final book, I don’t think will change my mind. His unrequited love, always good intentions and for me, the spark that I don’t feel with Gale. Whom I see nothing more than a brother. But with the kiss and the confession, I’m a bit angry with Katniss for choosing him instead. Its like Bella, Jacob and Edward all over again!

I somehow knew the Games will not go according to the Capitol’s plan and that the revolution will soon take place. The conclusion was great, gearing you up for what’s ahead. You can only expect the fire to spread out and become stronger once it catches on. I like seeing the old characters back especially Cinna and in a way, Haymitch. The new cast mainly comprised of the district victors were also interesting. Finnick, now him I like to see in the big screen 😉 Hope everything translates well when its turned into a movie. I give it 2 thumbs up!

Dog Days Are Over

Soon. ‘Dog days’ is a period marked by lethargy, inactivity, or indolence.

For some time, I thought the day won’t come when I’ll busy myself with work again. Believe me, I’m extra grateful but I’m starting to get anxious. Because if all goes according to plan, I’ll be starting the new year with a new job, working with new people in a new company. I don’t know what to expect, I’m practically a novice as they say in gamer’s language. I hope the first few weeks will pass like a breeze.

During those times of idle and I was looking back, I realized I have overlooked so much of everything around me. From petty things such as the growing mess that is my room to more serious stuff like not being able to go to church regularly. I may not look it but I’m a spiritual being too. We all are and I guess I needed those days to see and contemplate on how to make my life better as a whole, not just my career. I guess everything does have a reason. These past 2 months I’ve caught up with the family especially my mom & dad. I’ve gotten in touch with good old friends. Really those times aren’t for anything else but to think, stay back and take a good look on how things have turned out for me. Indeed I’ve taken a lot for granted but I’m ready to turn a new leaf and start the next chapter.

Happy New Year To Us! 🙂

2011 Globe Noms Announced

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association just released the list of nominees for the January 2011 Golden Globe Awards ceremony to be hosted by funny brit Ricky Gervais (again). Glee & The King’s Speech both lead with the most noms: 5 & 7, respectively. HBO garnered 12 noms all in all. Here’s the rundown:

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
• BLACK SWAN
• THE FIGHTER
• INCEPTION
• THE KING’S SPEECH
• THE SOCIAL NETWORK
Yes! 2 of my fave movies this year & personally, the best as well, were nominated. Of course I’m talking about Inception & The Social Network. Critics are buzzing though with the movie that’s been predicted to be a staple on the Oscars, Colin Firth’s The King’s Speech. We’ll see.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
• HALLE BERRY: FRANKIE AND ALICE
• NICOLE KIDMAN: RABBIT HOLE
• JENNIFER LAWRENCE: WINTER’S BONE
• NATALIE PORTMAN: BLACK SWAN
• MICHELLE WILLIAMS: BLUE VALENTINE
Much controversy has surrounded the films Blue Valentine & Black Swan, the former for getting an R rating for a supposed oral sex scene between Ryan Gosling’s & Michelle Williams’ characters which later was changed to an NC-17 rating. Black Swan, for Natalie Portman’s & Mila Kunis’ onscreen kiss & the dark theme of the movie. But I didn’t realize these were critically acclaimed, I guess it helps since I don’t know anything about Nicole’s nor Halle’s movies.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
• JESSE EISENBERG: THE SOCIAL NETWORK
• COLIN FIRTH: THE KING’S SPEECH
• JAMES FRANCO: 127 HOURS
• RYAN GOSLING: BLUE VALENTINE
• MARK WAHLBERG: THE FIGHTER
I’d say Jesse Eisenberg! But we have James Franco, who’s realistic take on the true story of a man who had to amputate his arm to escape death garnered a nod. Mark Wahlberg is also in for the said to be strong Oscar contender, The Fighter. Close call.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• ALICE IN WONDERLAND
• BURLESQUE
• THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
• RED
• THE TOURIST
Its kinda funny that Burlesque was even nominated, oh well I can take that but The Tourist for Comedy? I’m guessing The Kids Are All Right will get this one.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• ANNETTE BENING: THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
• ANNE HATHAWAY: LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS
• ANGELINA JOLIE: THE TOURIST
• JULIANNE MOORE: THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
• EMMA STONE: EASY A
Its great that Anne was nominated since she probably shot the entire film naked but its even greater that Emma Stone gets a nod for Easy A!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• JOHNNY DEPP: ALICE IN WONDERLAND
• JOHNNY DEPP: THE TOURIST
• PAUL GIAMATTI: BARNEY’S VERSION
• JAKE GYLLENHAAL: LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS
• KEVIN SPACEY: CASINO JACK
Of course Johnny Depp scores 2 noms in the same category but more so I think Jake Gyllenhaal’s butt getting nominated is an even bigger deal.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
• DESPICABLE ME
• HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON
• THE ILLUSIONIST
• TANGLED
• TOY STORY 3
Tough one, but I have to choose Toy Story though I have yet to watch Tangled.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
• AMY ADAMS: THE FIGHTER
• HELENA BONHAM CARTER: THE KING’S SPEECH
• MILA KUNIS: BLACK SWAN
• MELISSA LEO: THE FIGHTER
• JACKI WEAVER: ANIMAL KINGDOM

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
• CHRISTIAN BALE: THE FIGHTER
• MICHAEL DOUGLAS: WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS
• ANDREW GARFIELD: THE SOCIAL NETWORK
• JEREMY RENNER: THE TOWN
• GEOFFREY RUSH: THE. KING’S SPEECH
Hooray for Andrew Garfield! He should bag this one.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
• BOARDWALK EMPIRE (HBO)
• DEXTER (SHOWTIME)
• THE GOOD WIFE (CBS)
• MAD MEN (AMC)
• THE WALKING DEAD (AMC)
I guess the biggest snub this year was Lost, who had their series finale this year. I think a lot of people will react to this one. But anyways I see no reason why Mad Men wouldn’t win as they always had.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
• JULIANNA MARGULIES: THE GOOD WIFE
• ELISABETH MOSS: MAD MEN
• PIPER PERABO: COVERT AFFAIRS
• KATEY SAGAL: SONS OF ANARCHY
• KYRA SEDGWICK: THE CLOSER

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
• STEVE BUSCEMI: BOARDWALK EMPIRE
• BRYAN CRANSTON: BREAKING BAD
• MICHAEL C. HALL: DEXTER
• JON HAMM: MAD MEN
• HUGH LAURIE: HOUSE

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• 30 ROCK (NBC)
• THE BIG BANG THEORY (CBS)
• THE BIG C (SHOWTIME)
• GLEE (FOX)
• MODERN FAMILY (ABC)
• NURSE JACKIE (SHOWTIME)
I really don’t get Nurse Jackie but please, please give others a shot aside from 30 Rock like Glee or Modern Family. Whatever happened to Desperate Housewives or Grey’s Anatomy?

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES -COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• TONI COLLETTE: UNITED STATES OF TARA
• EDIE FALCO: NURSE JACKIE
• TINA FEY: 30 ROCK
• LAURA LINNEY: THE BIG C
• LEA MICHELE: GLEE

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• ALEC BALDWIN: 30 ROCK
• STEVE CARELL: THE OFFICE
• THOMAS JANE: HUNG
• MATTHEW MORRISON: GLEE
• JIM PARSONS: THE BIG BANG THEORY

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
• HOPE DAVIS: THE SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP
• JANE LYNCH: GLEE
• KELLY MACDONALD: BOARDWALK EMPIRE
• JULIA STILES: DEXTER
• SOFIA VERGARA: MODERN FAMILY

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
• SCOTT CAAN: HAWAII FIVE-O
• CHRIS COLFER: GLEE
• CHRIS NOTH: THE GOOD WIFE
• ERIC STONESTREET: MODERN FAMILY
• DAVID STRATHAIRN: TEMPLE GRANDIN
I’m biased on the acting nods I think the Glee actors deserve those awards.

Hopefully some of my faves do win. Who’s yours?

High Fashion

Cycle 15 of America’s Next Top Model is all about high fashion for the winner will be featured in the pages of Italian Vogue, cover of Beauty In Vogue, even on the Vogue.it website, a contract with Covergirl cosmetics & a contract with IMG model management. Plus the designers & photographers the models were able to work with are just the finest & best: Diane Von Furstenberg, Patrick Demarchelier, Zac Posen & Roberto Cavalli to name a few.

Out of the 14, Ann emerged as the winner. The awkward & freakishly tall (6’2″) girl with haunting eyes who managed to get best picture for 5 weeks in a row. No one has ever done that by the way. Some would say a misfit from the group but I’m telling you she is definitely the right choice, I can see her fit in the Italian fashion industry. Chelsey, as the judges said, is more American fashion and for me, she would definitely win if she joined the previous cycles instead (I can name winners she can give a run for their title). They’re both really good but I guess the high end prizes ended up hurting Chelsey in the end. I’m a bit concerned with Ann’s personality but I guess if you can take gorgeous pictures & look amazing in couture then you will get booked which is most important. I’m curious on how Tyra can top this cycle, will she be able to work with Vogue Italia again just like with Seventeen Magazine? We’ll see.

The Richards Win TARA!

Season 4 of The Amazing Race Asia marks the first win for a Philippine team ever to join the race. The duo of Richard Herrera & Richard Hardin, or aptly named the Richards, was the first team to reach the 11th & final pitstop of the race beating the father/daughter tandem from Indonesia & the rebel girls of Singapore, where the last leg was actually held.

After the disappointing loss of Marc & Rovilson in Season 2 due to a stupid flag challenge, I thought we were jinxed. A Philippine team would always reach the finals (I think) but never win. I’ve never been excited to watch the finale since that season but I was hooked again this time. Anyways, I always said if ever I’m going to join a reality competition this would be it. Though I would like to say ANTM, I’m afraid I’m not really what they’re looking for, haha. But man the stunts they did, I thought no I can never do that. I should team up with a daredevil. This season really was worth watching, good job to AXN. Congrats to the Richards! Well played fellas!

HOT or NOT?

I was watching HBO last week and saw a movie called Center Stage: Turn It Up (apparently its a sequel to the 2000 ballet flick). A certain actor named Kenny Wormald caught my attention and he’s a looker. He’s an awesome dancer, really I don’t think anyone can make ballet that sexy. Proving he’s got skills, he was in MTV’s Dancelife, performed for Justin Timberlake’s Futuresex/Loveshow Tour and rumor has it that he got the lead role in the remake of Kevin Bacon’s classic, Footloose. In which both Zac Efron & Chace Crawford were initially offered the role.

So what do you think, hot or not?
